Twitter Still on the Rise

Twitter the micro blogging site has captured the imagination of thousands of people including celebrities and other famous figures. The site was created in 2006 by Jack Dorsey who had a daylong brainstorming session with board members of company Odeo.

The site was initially used as an internal service for the company, which later launched to the public on July 2006. Twitter then suddenly exploded in popularity and became a much loved social platform. But Twitter also faced wide criticism due to outages that the system experienced, especially when breaking news broke out on
the site.

But Twitter has gradually overcome this and traffic has still exploded. According to Hitwise, the site is the fifth most viewed social networking site, with most of the growth actually happening in 2009. But keeping in mind this is only people that accessed the site directly, if they were using other methods such as mobiles or third party applications then these are not added.

The explosion in traffic to the site in my opinion has been created by celebrities. People are just creating accounts to follow their idols and media outlets are reporting what these people said on their accounts. But can Twitter really catch up with the big guns such as MySpace, Bebo and Facebook?

Personally I do not think it can, the site just does not have enough depth to see it overtake these power horses. There is one basic function that you can do and that is to read peoples tweets. If we then look at the likes of Facebook who now has more then 200 million members, you will come to notice that there is so much more you can do. Personally by logging into your Facebook account, you can not only see peoples updates like you can do on Twitter, but you can join and create groups, add a huge amount of third party applications and games and view people’s profile pictures. Besides this you can also follow celebrities fan pages.

To me Facebook is the site that does it all and if Twitter wants to expand their horizons and compete with the big guns then they have to expand the use of the site as a whole. Why not introduce more images on people’s profiles or various Twitter games to keep people occupied and willing to come back.

It will be a great thing to see how the war between all four of these sites work out.
