What Is The Kindle Fire?

The Kindle Fire is a much different device than Amazon’s other Kindle products in that it is designed to be much more than a pure eReader. The Fire is actually a tablet computer, more along the lines of the iPad and Xoom than any type of device dedicated to reading only. However, it would be a mistake to compare it to the top of the line Apple and Android tablets since it is not intended to compete with those devices. The goal of the Kindle Fire is to dramatically enhance the buyer’s ease of consumption of Amazon products. And for this purpose it works quite well. It is also the reason why this device is so much less expensive than its more advanced cousins.

What the Fire does offer is the core elements you’d expect of any tablet device. You can watch movies on it, play video games, download apps, and access many other included, free apps, like those for Netflix, Pandora and Hulu. You can also download music, and, of course, read books and other publications. It also includes a basic email client. It comes with built-in wi-fi, but no 3-G.

The Fire has a 7” screen that is made of gorilla glass and is extremely scratch and damage resistant; so you probably won’t need an additional protective cover. Also, the Fire comes with total on-screen touch navigation. It sports a quite fast dual-core processor so that web-pages load fast and other functions operate smoothly. It also has a rubberized back which prevents it from sliding around when laid on smooth surfaces. The Fire has 8 GB of storage, which might seem a little low in today’s world until you consider that much of what you will access and buy with it will be stored in Amazon’s cloud – for free.

As a reading device it is quite different from other Kindles in that it uses a back lit screen. This is great for low light situations, but not so good in bright light. And, unfortunately, it doesn’t display page numbers as does the Kindle Touch. But it does feature the option to load web-pages in either mobile or regular format. And the music downloads are playable on any device – even Apple products. Battery life is around 8 hours for reading and a little under that for watching videos.

The Fire utilizes an Android platform with files and applications displayed on the screen in a carousel format you can conveniently rotate through. And items can easily be deleted from this display if need be.

The bottom line is that the Kindle Fire is a tablet specifically designed to maximize your interaction with Amazon.com. It has all of the fun stuff associated with full-featured tablets, but few of the bells and whistles (like expandable memory, GPS, camera). But given what it’s designed for and what it delivers, for the price it is absolutely an excellent product – especially for a first generation release.
